Behind the lens

Every story
starts with light.

A dark room. A strip of film. A camera in your pocket.
Different tools, the same curiosity: how do we hold on to a moment?

A short journey through cameras, vlogs, and the light that connects them.

01 / The story so far

From dark rooms
to daily vlogs.

Pick a moment in time. See what changed—and what never did.

Chapter 01

A room becomes a camera.

A camera obscura is a dark space with a small opening. Light from the outside crosses through that opening and projects an upside-down view on the opposite wall. Add a lens, and you can collect more light and focus the image.

The image existed before we could save it.

02 / Follow a ray of light

You’re in control
of the light.

Move the sliders. A wider opening collects more light; a longer exposure also records more movement.

Light collected1.00×relative to the starting settings

An illustrated learning model. Brightness, blur, and grain are simplified; real results also depend on the scene, lens, film, and sensor.

What captures the light?

A lower f-number means a wider opening: more light, and usually a softer background.

A longer exposure collects more light. Moving subjects travel farther during that time, creating blur.

Higher ISO brightens the recorded signal and can make noise more visible. It doesn’t add light—watch the light-collected number stay still.

Light becomes a signal.

Photodiodes in the sensor turn light into electrical charge. The camera reads the signal, converts it into numbers, and processes them into an image. Repeat the capture many times each second, and you have video.

Try this

Different settings.
A similar brightness.

Reset the lab. Change from f/4 to f/2: that’s about four times the light. Now shorten the exposure from 1/125s to 1/500s. The brightness returns close to the start, but the background and motion look different.

03 / Your point of view

The technology changes.
